The most effective way to prevent violence and abuse is to engage bystanders. We believe that for every act of violence ~ bullying, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, teen dating abuse, domestic violence ~ there is a moment when someone can step in to stop it. This is the principle behind Green Dot.
It is really very simple: teach bystanders how to watch out for each other by recognizing when someone is in trouble and empower them with Green Dot strategies to safely and effectively intervene.
The Advocates has been doing violence prevention work in South Central Idaho for over 20 years. Our prevention and education team is always researching new and innovative ways to reduce the number of people hurt by interpersonal violence.
Green Dot strategies are predicated on the belief that individual safety is a community responsibility and the big picture goal is to empower a force of engaged and proactive bystanders.
- Know that for every act of violence–bullying, sexual assault, stalking, dating abuse–there is a moment when someone can step in to stop it.
- Teach bystanders how to watch out for each other by recognizing when someone is in trouble and empower them with safe, effective ways to intervene.
- Promote conversations and actions that say violence is not okay and everyone is expected to do their part to help keep their community safe.
Everyone has the power to create change. If we all unite in the common cause of violence prevention we can create a culture shift where violence is not an accepted part of our community. No one has to do everything, but everyone has to
