The purpose of Green Dot
…is to teach bystanders how to recognize when someone is in danger; then, empower them with Green Dot strategies to safely and effectively intervene. In South Central Idaho, the Advocates has pioneered violence prevention work for over 20 years. To this day, our prevention and education team is constantly researching new and innovative ways to reduce the number of people hurt by interpersonal violence.
Green Dot strategies are predicated on the belief that individual safety is a community responsibility. That said, the big picture goal is to empower a force of engaged and proactive bystanders. For every act of violence — bullying, sexual assault, stalking, dating abuse — there is a moment when someone can step in to stop it. And, it’s through Green Dot that bystanders learn how to watch out for each other by recognizing when someone is in trouble.
Empowered with safe, effective ways to intervene, bystanders use Green Dot’s program to illicit conversations and actions conveying that violence is not the answer; furthermore, that everyone is expected to do their part in helping keep their community safe. Everyone has the power to create change. Through uniting in the common cause of violence prevention, we can create a positive, effective culture shift. At the end of the day…
no one has to do everything, but everyone has to do something.
